Finding and Using Seasonal Material

In the VL Live content update published on 26th November, we have concentrated on two things:

completing the publication of all the liturgical elements in Common Worship: Times and Seasons
Making seasonal content from Times and Seasons easier to find.

We've put a lot of work into "tagging" (or indexing) this material in two ways, so that you can find it easily in the VL Live browser. Firstly, we've tried to be more thorough and consistent in using the helpful coding scheme that features in the book. So, if you already have a Times and Seasons book, and you can see an item that you want to use in VL, you can search for it using the codes. For example, the Kyrie Confessions for Epiphany on pages 121-122 of Times and Seasons are items B1-B4 in the Epi section of the book. So you can find them by searching for CW TS Epi. And you can find the fourth one by searching for CW TS Epi B4.

Try this principle to find any coded item in Times and Seasons - search for CW TS followed by the section and item. Use the Red section code from the top of each page, and the red item code to the left of the item you need.

But we've also made it easier to find material in more general searches. Try searching for Advent, for example, or Christmas, and you'll see that the material is now a lot more consistent in its labelling. We hope it's easier for you to find and manage; what do you think?

Access to hymns

I do not seem to be able to access the hymns at all. I haven't been able to do so for some weeks. I have emailed VL 4 times, I have asked them to ring me. It is very irritating not to be able to speak to someone direct. Does anyone else have this problem. I tried to follow the instructions in a previous thread from Tim to Liz, but I didn't really understand what I was meant to do....anyone have any suggestions as to how I can get some sort of reply out of the VL people?

Query re daily lectionary

I used the Evening Prayer smart template today just to try it out and it gave the readings for Morning prayer instead of the Evening ones. Is this a glitch or have I done something wierd. Incidentally it would be very good if these radings came out in full, I understood this would be the case........

Saints on Earth/Methodist Module

Since upgrading, when I load VL, sometimes SOE appears with all the info etc, and other times not. Also, I have lost the Methodist Module. Any advice?

Usage reports for hymns

Can someone help me to get the box with usage, source etc for hymns back? I can get the text by clicking on the hymn, but there are no details in the left hand side of the box where I should be able to get sources, usage report etc.

We do our best at Church House Publishing to respond to queries as quickly as possible, but we are a small team and we have to divide our time between telephone support, answering your emails, and keeping the support forums up-to-date; and that's before we've done any new product development work. Canticle 24

Services Planner - saving layouts

I have set up two layouts in the services planner as follows:

1. Shows me the roles only for our 8:00 service
2. Shows me the roles only for our 10:00 service

There are different service templates and different roles, so I want to have two separate layouts. Both of them are grouped by location and then by time and then sorted by date.

Whilst in the services planner, I can select a specific time, so that I only see - for example - the 8:00 services. This is fine!

BUT....

Even if I then save the layout, when I come to re-open it, it doesn't remember that I chose only to see one time and still shows me all services.

Have I missed something? Is there a way for the planner to remember that my 8:00 layout should only show me the 8:00 services?

Managing service templates

When using the "Manage Service Templates" option, I get a list of folders, sub-folders and templates within them. The order that they appear in this window is that same order that they appear on the "Create Service" tab.

What I would like is the ability, within "Manage Serviec Templates" to re-arrange the order of these folders and sub-folders. For example, at the moment the three main folders are:
- Alternative Service Book
- Methodist Worship
- Common Worship

I would like to be able to make Common Worship my "top" folder.

Equally, within folders, I would like to be able to re-arrange the sub-folders (for example, making "Frequently used services" the top sub-folder in the Common Worship folder.

Is there anyway that I can do this or do I have to hope for some program update?

Inserting actuals names into service plan

Hi,

Currently to add personal details to a service, eg a wedding, I export the service to MS Word and replace "N and N" with the correct names. Is there any way to do this from within Visua Liturgy without the change becoming a permanent part of the template?

How do I format Calendar entries to print properly?

I am trying to generate monthly calendar sheets from VLL that can be posted in church. When I add an entry it is frequently too wide to fit in a day box on one line. The entry is truncated at the day boundary. Is it possible to format entries so that they wrap properly on a day box boundary?

If not, is it something for which a style sheet is required? If so, how can I go about writing one?

Epiphany - Lent - Times and Seasons etc

I am wondering if I am the only person who is finding Visual Liturgy live is not providing as satisfactory a service as I had imagined it would? I had difficulty finding the texts from the book in the software for Advent and Christmas. Now Epiphany and even Lent. Is there anyone out there who is finding it doing what you expect it to?

Psalms and Responses

I produce a list of readings for each Sunday using a VL template. Can I put into the Psalm the RCL responses, other than typing them out? Also the RCL differs in some areas from the Common Worship Lectionary in VL Live. Will the RCL be available in VL?

Stylesheets and margins

I am somewhat short-sighted and like to have my services printed out from VLL on to A5 (A4 landscape 2 pages per sheet). It is pretty easy to do this with W[i][/i]ord, but the margin for "[i]All"[/i] means quite a bit of each page is wasted. I know from the [b]BOLD[/b]what is congregation and what is not. As the reader leading the worship, removing the [i]All[/i]is not a problem.

However my VLL seems to have issues with the Help section and anyway I fear the information is not in the help. What I need is a simple way to make/create/change a set of style sheets for printing the service. I know someone must have done it and it would save me hours fiddling.

Problem with Browse

Can you help me with this problem.

If I open VL Live and Browse for a hymn then select the hymn I am looking for and press the Text Details button, I get the correct split screen showing the words. On the left hand side screen I get the available tabs: (Details, Text, Notes, Tunes, Sources etc.) All well and good.

If I now close the screen, select the hymn again and hit the Text Details button, I get the correct right hand screen, but the left hand screen of tabs is empty.

In order to get the menu in the left hand screen I have to exit VL Live and start again.

Epiphany readings

Have been putting together readings sheets for the next few months and discovered that VL's set readings don't match the ones in the printed 2007-2008 lectionary for 3rd and 4th Sunday of Epiphany. Our reader phoned CHP who told him the readings had been changed because of a decision at General Synod.

It's going to get confusing anywhere that some people use the booklet and some use VL.

Since moving house, my email address has changed and I now need to resubscribe to the VL mailing list. BUT.....

I can't remember how to do it and when I go to the COIN website, the information there isn't very helpful. I've tried emailing COIN but the email has now bounced back to me. So can someone help me to find out how to resubscribe to the VL list?

Adding role columns to service planner.

Hi, I would like to be able to include such roles as preacher & leader into the service planner but I can't work out how to do this. I have managed to do it for the overview but not the planner. And yet ironically I have column for flowers, organist etc which I don't really need. Can some one help me? Thanks.

Diary Items

On trying to delete a diary item I found I was unable to do so.

If I right click an entry the delete diary entry option is greyed out.

However, all other options are available.

So I can amend a diary item without problem, but if I open the item and delete the text (to try and get rid of the entry) and then attempt to close the item I get an error message 'Missing Mandatory Item: Diary Entry'.

Any help?

Exporting a shortlist to a file

The user guide says that a short list from the browser window can be printed or exported to a file by using the "respective buttons provided" (p71). Having struggled to resize the window so that the buttons appear on the screen, there is a "print" button, but nothing to export. The text in the print window can't be selected to export it, nor is there an export button there.

So is it actually possible to export a short list?

Copying a text item - themes not being copied

Not a major problem, but a bug all the same.....

If, within the browser, I rightclick on an item and take the option to copy it, I am asked the question "Do you want to copy themes and lectionary entries as well as the text?"

If I click the "yes" box, I find that themes are NOT actually copied.

Difficulty with Service Planner

How to find the Times and Seasons material

We will shortly be sending you an update which will re-arrange the Times and Seasons material making it easier to find than it currently is.
At the moment you will find some of your Times and Seasons material in the corresponding folder in the Create Service tab and other templates for other seasons can be found in the 'All Services' folder (for example Holy Communion Order One in Advent).

Ascension to Pentecost material will also be included in the next update.

Opening (or not) a VL4 service

When I try to open in VL Live the copied over and saved VL4 service for 1 July 2007 I get an error message saying "Conversion from type 'DBNull' to type 'String' is not valid".

There is "more info" available which doesn't help, and an "OK" button which takes you back to the Open Service page (endless loop).

I also can't see how to delete it either.

Can you solve both of these please?

Stylesheets

It would appear that when trying to edit a stylesheet, the software takes no account of the current file that is open and thus the stylesheet being used. It assumes that you want to edit the default stylesheet, thus if you have a New Patterns for Worship service open and edit the stylesheet, it makes no difference to the current file open.

To get round this you have determine the stylesheet in use (not necessarily easy - as it doesn't say), open it and then edit that one.

I think that may be a bug that needs fixing.

Problem with Services Planner

Since upgrading yesterday the services planner list has begun to be misleading. When I try to open this coming Sunday's service 17th June, it opens 8th July instead! :w00t: and likewise for different services - never the one I want! I can get round it by opening services on the Home tab where it is faithful, but it can be annoying having to do that. Any help welcome.

Newly created template problems

I have twice produced a customised 'Baptism at Holy Communion' template for our Church. Each time I have not been able to use it when calling up a new service for a specific date. It comes up with the message -

Visual Liturgy was unable to complete an operation. The message is:
Conversion from type ‘DBNull’ to type ‘Byte’ is not valid.

It simply refuses to open the service. I have to begin from the beginning again.

Opening another created template brings up the message -

Visual Liturgy was unable to complete an operation. The message is:
Object reference not set to an instance of the object.

Perhaps I am doing something wrong - it generally worked okay with VL4. Could someone please help me (or is there somewhere else I ought to be going for help? A technical problem phone line perhaps? Getting help from the web doesn't always seem to be as satisfactory as one might like it to be.)

Problems saving Morning Prayer BCP

I have been unable to save to the planner a dated service of Morning Prayer BCP. The button [b]save as a planned service for future use[/b] will not switch on and despite having options of place and time in the system, none appear in the drop down box. I did not experience this difficulty with VL4 and using the smart template for Morning Prayer Common worship has been successful. Where am I going wrong please?
