In the VL Live content update published on 26th November, we have concentrated on two things:
  • completing the publication of all the liturgical elements in Common Worship: Times and Seasons
  • Making seasonal content from Times and Seasons easier to find.

We've put a lot of work into "tagging" (or indexing) this material in two ways, so that you can find it easily in the VL Live browser. Firstly, we've tried to be more thorough and consistent in using the helpful coding scheme that features in the book. So, if you already have a Times and Seasons book, and you can see an item that you want to use in VL, you can search for it using the codes. For example, the Kyrie Confessions for Epiphany on pages 121-122 of Times and Seasons are items B1-B4 in the Epi section of the book. So you can find them by searching for CW TS Epi. And you can find the fourth one by searching for CW TS Epi B4

Try this principle to find any coded item in Times and Seasons - search for CW TS followed by the section and item. Use the Red section code from the top of each page, and the red item code to the left of the item you need.

But we've also made it easier to find material in more general searches. Try searching for Advent, for example, or Christmas, and you'll see that the material is now a lot more consistent in its labelling. We hope it's easier for you to find and manage; what do you think?

Though it is good to have seasonal material now available, it would be even better if the contents of Times and Seasons in Vl actually showed this; expand Advent under Times and Seasons in VL and all you will get is Holy Communion for Advent.  The parallel index in New Patterns of Worship mirrors that in the book and so makes it much easier to use.  Many of us will doubtless use Times and Seasons in the same way and so it would be helpful - dare one say essential, to have the same index in VL for finding items.  I was delighted to see the prayers for the Advent wreath but if I hadn't browsed for them I would not have known they were entered.  Would it be too much to ask  as a matter of urgency to look at the index and make it mirror that of Times and Seasons in its printed form?

Further to the previous posting, I have now found material from the Kingdom Season which is not even indexed in Times and Season and thus the unwary might not know it is even there; please update the index quam celerrime.

Can anyone please tell me if the Christmas Carol Service Bidding Prayer (2) (page 89: Times & Seasons) is lurking in VL somewhere? I have actually found prayer 3 but not 2.

Also will the agricultural year from Times and Seasons be included during 2009 and preferably before Rogation?

Derek,

there is still some work to do in this area, but a word of explanation about our priorities might help. At the end of 2008, we were concentrating on completing the editing of all the liturgical items in VL Live. We wanted to make sure the items themselves were accurate, and accurately coded. Since then, in the content updates, we've made some improvements to the coding.

This is because VL users needed the items themsleves as a priority, then needed to be able to find them, and then finally to incorporate them in services. We have left the fully worked-out services in Times and Seasons until last because they're time-consuming and often they're just variations of what many of you are already doing (a seasonal version of Holy Communion Order One, for example).

There are two kinds of services in Visual Liturgy - Service Templates and Resource Templates. This latter kind is what you see as Resource documents under the heading New Patterns for Worship, and services like this are basically just a list of all the liturgical items. Now that we've got all the Times and Seasons items in VL Live, we're concentrating on the service templates because you can find all the Times and Seasons material and use it like a resource template using the Browser.

If you wanted, for example, all the items in Times and Seasons for Lent, you would open the Browser and search for CW TS Lnt. The results will appear as a coded list from A1 to S5, in the same order as the book. You could then create a resource template of your own very easily, actually, by dragging and dropping them into a service template which you could then save in your Times and Seasons service folder for future use.

If you, or anyone else reading this, is unfamiliar with creating new templates using drag-and-drop, then post a reply and one of us will expand further.

I hope that information is helpful,
